Hungarian success in the world’s most prestigious wine ranking contest

Hungarian winemakers won 10 gold and 10 silver medals at Challenge International du Vin in Bordeaux, France.

According to Szeretlek Magyarorszag, Hungarian wines were very successful again in June in France at Challenge International du Vin, the most prestigious international winemaking contest, where they won 10 gold and 10 silver medals. The competition has taken place since 1976, and this time, there were 3,544 contestants from 33 countries, among which there were 20 Hungarian wines. Interestingly, all of them were white wines except for one rosé, and 11 of them were sweet.

Szeretlek Magyarorszag got to talk with one of the winners, the Söptei Winery in Csopak, who won a gold medal with their Söptei Varázslat 2018 in the white wine category. The leader of the winery said that the tradition of winemaking dates back 150 years in the historical vineyard of Balatonfüred-Csopak. He also said that this is not the first time they received an award at the French contest. In 2017, their “Hangulat 2015” yellow muscat won gold while their “Harmónia 2015” pinot blanc-chardonnay-pinot gris and yellow muscat from 2013 got silver in the contest. Moreover, in 2011, they won two bronze medals while in 2010, one silver.

Zsolt Söptei’s wines are famous and regularly win awards even in the historical vineyard of Balatonfüred-Csopak. For example, between June 25-26, they got a gold at the 29th Wine Contest of Balatonfüred. There, they took part with their “Varázslat 2018”, an Italian Riesling, and “Desszert”, a botrytis yellow muscat from 2018.
